چکیده

We present the detection of a radio-emitting jet from the black-hole candidate and X-ray binary source Cygnus X-1. Evidence of a bright core with a slightly extended structure was found on milliarcsecond resolution observations with the VLBA at 15.4 GHz. Later observations with the VLBA (and including the phased up VLA) at 8.4 GHz show an extended jet-like feature extending to ∼ 15 mas from a core region, with an opening angle of < 2◦. In addition, lower resolution MERLIN observations at 5 GHz show that the source has < 10 per cent linear polarization. The source was in the low/hard X-ray state during the observations, and the results confirm the existence of persistent radio emission from an unresolved core and a variable relativistic (> 0.6 c) jet during this state.

External Compton emission from relativistic jets in Galactic black hole candidates and ultraluminous X-ray sources

Galactic binary systems that contain a black hole candidate emit hard X-rays in their low luminosity mode. We show that this emission can be understood as due to the Compton scattering of photons from the companion star and/or the accretion disk by relativistic electrons in a jet. The same electrons are also responsible for the radio emission. Two sources — XTE J1118+480 and Cygnus X-1 — are mo...

A Complete Relativistic Ionized Accretion Disc in Cygnus X – 1 3

The galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X–1 is observed to be in one of two X-ray spectral states; either the low/hard (low soft X-ray flux and a flat power law tail) or high/soft (high blackbody-like soft X-ray flux and a steep power law tail) state. The physical origin of these two states is unclear. We present here a model of an ionized accretion disc, the spectrum of which is blurred by re...

Composition, Collimation, Contamination: the Jet of Cygnus X-1

We model the observed size and brightness of the VLBA radio core of the jet in Cygnus X-1 to derive an expression for the jet power as a function of basic jet parameters. We apply this expression to recent constraints on the jet power from observations of a large scale shocked shell around the source by Gallo et al. 2005, which leads us to a set of alternative conclusions: either (a) the jet co...

A transient relativistic radio jet from Cygnus X - 1 3

We report the first observation of a transient relativistic jet from the canonical black hole candidate, Cygnus X-1, obtained with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN). The jet was observed in only one of six epochs of MERLIN imaging of the source during a phase of repeated X-ray spectral transitions in 2004 Jan–Feb, and this epoch corresponded to the softest 1.5-12 ke...

Variable Gamma-ray Emission from Microblazars

We propose a model for gamma-ray emitting microblazars based on the Compton interaction of a relativistic electron-positron plasma, ejected in a jet feature, with the UV-photon field provided by a high-mass stellar companion. Taking into account the gravitational effects of the star upon the accretion disk, we predict a jet precession which results in a variable, periodic, high-energy gamma-ray...
